Smuggler
Connecticut:
Summer is in full sizzle and I'm trying to think of cool things. Lawn sprinklers. Frozen drinks (Cyril's BBCs!). Miles Davis. Ice Cream. As a New Yorker, ice cream instantly calls to mind one thing - Carvel.
Tom Carvel, creator of the best soft serve ever (sorry, Mr. Softee, and all of your sketchy copycats on the streets of NYC), was born Athanasios Karvelas in Greece in 1906, and began selling ice cream out of a truck in 1929 in Hartsdale, NY. He switched to fixed roadside locations and developed his secret recipe for soft serve in 1936. Interestingly, but less refreshingly, carvel is also a style of boat construction whereby the wooden planks of the hull of a boat are fastened edge-to-edge rather than in an overlapping manner, creating a smooth surface, as in the boat pictured here. This boat, Smuggler, doesn't scream "ice cream" (like we all do!) but I can see a slight Fudgie the Whale resemblance. Or maybe it's just heatstroke. In any case, extra chocolate crunchies on my vanilla cone, please.
